Congress is moving closer to hearings and a full-fledged investigation of the exploding scandal surrounding Rep Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the Pakistani spies she and over two dozen other Democrats employed as supposed IT specialists, gaining full access to classified government information, including Intelligence.
The Awan spy family is also accused of stealing sensitive computer equipment from the offices of House members, according to senior congressional sources of the Washington Free Beacon.
Based upon the unfolding developments, congressional leaders have asked the Capitol Police for a formal briefing into its ongoing investigation, now being conducted jointly with the FBI. Rep Ron DeSantis (R-FL), a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and chair of its National Security Subcommittee, formally requested the briefing on Tuesday.
He said the situation amounts to “one of the all-time congressional scandals in the last 30 years.” Congressional leaders are acting independent of the criminal investigation, as the urgency of the threat doesn’t allow the luxury of waiting for a full investigation to be conducted. Relevant congressional committees are beginning an investigation that will likely include compelling Rep Wasserman Schultz to testify.
Wasserman Schultz’s behavior has been odd, evasive, obstructionist and abusive at times, creating suspicion that she may be playing a role in the events and the breaches beyond simple naiveté or ignorance. Her continued payments of taxpayer dollars to Imran Awan for months following his being identified as a possible spy and denied access to government computers is one aspect of her conduct that her fellow lawmakers have deemed to be suspicious.
Rep Ron DeSantis, a military JAG officer prior to becoming a member of Congress, told the Free Beacon, “I’m pushing very hard to get a full briefing from Capitol Police as soon as possible. There’s clearly criminal elements to this and I think there will be more going on. There’s probably going to be ethics issues on why these [taxpayer] funds were spent that [Wasserman Schultz] and others [Gregory Meeks D-NY] will have to deal with.”
He added, “We have to know what happened now and we can’t wait for a criminal case to be done. We need an immediate briefing from the Capitol Police.” They’ll get it, soon and things are going to become very difficult for Wasserman Schultz once that takes place; she’ll have to try to explain to her peers, investigators and the American people what may not be explainable.
The congressional investigation will likely be conducted by the House Committee on Administration in conjunction with House Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) office. While the mainstream media has done a good job of covering up the scandal and pretending it doesn’t exist, it is described by unnamed sources as “having rocked the halls of Congress.”
While the Democrats have been busy with their political distraction and misdirection of the Russia, Russia, Russia impeachment hoax, a real threat to national security was being conducted and covered up by their own members.
Another unnamed congressional source told the Free Beacon, “The extent of the potential breaches has been made more clear” in recent weeks. “The inexplicable nature of the conduct of Wassermann Schultz and others has broadened” congressional interest. That includes the uninterrupted payments to Imran Awan, the source saying, “At best for her that is gross misapplication of public funds. That could merit resignation alone. There’s got to be more to that story.”
Rep Louie Gohmert (R-TX) shares the concerns of Rep DeSantis, agreeing that, “Yes, we could ask for her [Wasserman Schultz] to testify. He described the situation as “incredible.” He noted, “You don’t have to be all that great at hacking to hack into almost anyone’s email and calendar.”
If Gohmert says she could be asked to testify, Wasserman Schultz might as well choose what dress she’s going to wear, it’s going to happen. A light, breathable cotton style dress might be a wise choice, Gohmert’s going to make her sweat.
