Useless Senate Won’t Approve Immigration Bills – Time To Change The Rules

People are talking about the House’s Thursday passage of two immigration-related bills, “Kate’s Law” and the “No Sanctuary For Criminals Act” as if they now simply need the President’s signature to become law. The unfortunate truth is that they’re now headed off to the Senate and the chances are that’s where they’ll die a quiet, lonely death.

It would be a great thing if there were enough patriotic, responsible Senators and a capable Majority Leader that could or would get the Senate to approve the Senate versions. Instead we’ve got a razor thin majority of 52 when 60 yes votes are needed and a feckless jellyfish, Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader. Nothing that takes any backbone will fail to slip through his fingers, no opportunities for failure will go unanswered.

“Kate’s Law,” named in honor of American Kate Steinle, who was murdered by a multi-time deported illegal, increases the penalties for illegals who re-enter the United States after being deported, including progressively longer incarceration periods. The “No Sanctuary for Criminals Act would prevent cities and government entities that refuse to comply with federal immigration enforcement from receiving federal grants.

The two bills represent the first immigration legislation that Congress has taken up since President Trump took over in the White House. The passage in the House was the easy part. If the Democrats hold to a strict party-line vote, which they invariably do or deviate within prescribed limits that still provide them a victory or defeat their opponents, the bills are doomed. They were able to approve Marco Rubio’s pro-Sharia bill because that had Democrat support, but nothing else comes out of this useless waste of taxpayer time and money.

As Lou Dobbs pointed out yesterday, the only chance that the Trump legislative agenda has is for Mitch McConnell to change the rules and allow a simple majority vote for passage.  We’ve got a full year and a half remaining in the Senate leadership position if he did so now, plenty of time to show the American people what can be done without Democrat obstructionism. That would not only advance the Trump agenda, it would likely provide momentum for even more Senate victories in 2018. Otherwise, the Trump agenda is dead on arrival and future prospects for political successes and the salvation of the Republic are significantly diminished.

Recent history indicates that barring such drastic measures, the two immigration bills are just the first of many that will be merely an exercise in futility. A piece of legislation similar to Kate’s law failed to pass the Senate last summer, with only three Democrats voting in favor.  A similar fate was suffered by another version of the sanctuary city bill, which was seven votes shy of passage.

The DC notes that this time around ten incumbent Democrat Senators from states that were won by President Trump, including Manchin (WV), Heitkamp (ND) and Donnelly (IN) are feeling the heat from their constituents, particularly in regards to Kate’s law. The sanctuary city bill targets many local Democrat political leaders and is more difficult for the politically correct Democrats to support. It received only three votes in the House vote on Thursday.

It’s a sad commentary that the United States Congress has to pass a federal law to mandate that other federal laws be followed and that those in objection do so in defense of criminals who are not even supposed to be in our nation to begin with. The political system has a great Constitution that relied upon the false assumption that those in government wanted to do what was best for the nation. That simply is no longer the case and we therefore have the equivalent of political suicide bombers, such as Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee and Dick Durbin doing whatever they can to destroy us from within.

The vote threshold for passage needs to be lowered immediately, with the Republicans taking over and rapidly working to pass the Trump agenda. That won’t happen. Mitch McConnell and many in the Senate plus Paul Ryan in the Senate do not want the President or the American people to succeed. They need to be replaced immediately as well. As they say in the south, “Time’s a wastin.”
