US, S Korea Fire Warning Missiles As Trump, Allies, UN Consider Response

South Korea and the United States staged a massive combined ballistic missile exercise Wednesday aimed at sending a warning message to North Korea, the South’s military said a day after the communist country claimed a successful long-range missile test. The allies fired a barrage of missiles, including the Hyunmoo-2 and the ATACMS, into the East Sea, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Korea Herald reports it came in response to the North’s nearly 600 mile test flight of an intercontinental ballistic missile, one capable of reaching Alaska. The North also claimed and celebrated their supposed mastery of the atmospheric re-entry technology for intercontinental ballistic missiles.

North Korea declared Tuesday that it had finally achieved its dream of building an intercontinental ballistic missile, saying it would ‘fundamentally put an end to the US nuclear war threat and blackmail’. The Korean Central News Agency also said the country’s ICBM is capable of carrying a large-sized warhead.

Wednesday’s joint military drill came as a clear warning to Kim Jong-un and at the direct order of President Moon Jae-in, Seoul’s presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said in a released statement, “President Moon said North Korea’s serious provocation required us to react with more than just a statement and that we need to clearly show our missile defense readiness to North Korea.”

President Trump called an emergency meeting on the Fourth of July to formulate a “measured response” to North Korea’s first intercontinental ballistic missile test, amid fears it could reach as far as Alaska. In a response delivered on Twitter, President Trump stated, “North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life? Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!

Clearly the most desirable option for all but Kim Jong-un would be for China to simply take him out, something they most certainly are capable of doing at will. Now would be a great time for a “despondent Kim” to commit suicide.

Aside from that possible eventuality, President Trump has called for a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council to formulate an international plan of action in response. A UN spokesman said the meeting of the 15-member council was likely to be scheduled for Wednesday.
