Greeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel with a handshake is one thing, that’s a nicety that bears little relevance beyond each recognizing that the other person is there. Shaking hands at the conclusion of a meeting is more significant and carries with it the appearance of being in agreement, that common ground was reached during the discussions, something to be played up to the folks back home. Regardless of progress being made or not made, there won’t be the customary handshake propaganda photos for the European Union supporters to flash around following this meeting. Merkel’s meeting with President Donald Trump was noticeably icy throughout.
Those who oppose Angela Merkel continuing as Chancellor in the fall elections may point out that this was her second such snubbing by a foreign leader in as many months. This time the American President wouldn’t look her way or acknowledge the urging of the press for them to shake hands. Even the childlike “will you be my friend” type of groveling for a handshake by Merkel got no reply from the American President. Obama would have had her in a hug and likely had his tongue halfway down her ear canal by that point.
It’s markedly similar to the treatment she received on February 3rd from Turkish President Erdogan, who makes an obvious effort not to look at Merkel. At the time it was attributed to her using terminology to describe Islamic terrorism that offended the thin-skinned Turk. She said in her remarks highlighting their successful meeting, “We spoke in detail about… the questions of the fight against Islamist terrorism, against every form of terrorism, also the terrorism of the PKK [the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, banned in Turkey]. Crazy Merkel, doesn’t she know there’s nothing Islamic about Islamic terrorism?
Erdogan put her straight, saying, “This expression ‘Islamist terror’ seriously saddens us Muslims. Such an expression is not correct because Islam and terror cannot be associated. The meaning of Islam is peace. Please let’s not use it. As long as it is used we need to stand against it. As a Muslim president personally I cannot accept that.”
Okay Erdogan, Merkel’s got a country full of religion of peace practitioners now and she’s already learning how peaceful they really are. That’s why her nation is about to toss her out on her frumpy rear end. She’ll certainly understand just how insensitive her comments were soon, along with the proper definition of the words “Kaboom” “Kapow” and “Blammo.”
In this most recent case with our President, it’s not clear what led to his unwillingness to shake her hand. Perhaps she refused to budge from her staunch globalist commitment to the destruction of the continent of Europe and establishing a Muslim caliphate in its place. She’s also strongly in favor of a powerful EU central government, something that President Trump understands weakens the individual nations and guts their sovereignty, so that could be it.
Maybe the differences were too much for him to be willing to give her the diplomatic trophy photo to take back. Now she has instead a second snub to laugh off and explain away as nothing. At some point her followers may begin to wonder if it’s something she’s doing wrong, this world government and invasion. That’s a question they should have asked a couple of years ago.
She got the same non-acknowledgment from Erdogan just over a month ago.
