President Trump received and has accepted an invitation from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a face to face meeting within 90 days. South Korea’s Nat’l Security Adviser…
President Trump has agreed to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in response to an invitation extended earlier today sent to the South Korean government.
South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-Yong recently led a delegation to Pyongyang which seems to be already bearing fruit. In a Thursday briefing, Chung delivered a personal letter to President Trump from Kim Jong Un, inviting the President to meet. [[VIDEO BELOW]]
Chung told reporters that North Korea has stated their commitment to denuclearization, stating that Kim had expressed “his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible.” He also announced the results, a positive response from the President, stating, “President Trump appreciated the greeting and said he would meet Kim Jong un by May to achieve permanent denuclearization.”
North Korea has also agreed that during the period leading up to and including the discussion, they will suspend all nuclear weapons testing.
A timely Olympics in South Korea provided a mechanism for the cooling of tensions between the North and South, with the teams participating in the opening ceremony jointly under a common flag and competing in women’s hockey as a single nation. Further diplomatic efforts followed, leading to this invitation.
It’s clear that had President Trump continued with Obama’s policy of “strategic patience,” doing nothing but delivering blustery speeches, there would be no motivation for Kim to forgo his nuclear program. Trump and his team, in concert with other nations, including China and Russia, got their attention and convinced, if this outreach is as it appears, the North to play nice for the first time in decades.
If an agreement and disarmament is reached, it will be a major foreign policy victory for President Trump, one that even the mainstream media, never-Trumpers and Democrats will have a difficult time finding ways to criticize.
Just to be on the safe side, considering the death last year of Kim’s brother half-brother from an assassination using VX nerve agent, maybe Trump should wear gloves when meeting Kim, or just a nod and wave might be more appropriate.
