President Trump went to the San Diego border and inspected wall prototypes as well as addressing reporters with CBP’s visual evidence of the difference a secure border brings to…
President Trump went to get a firsthand look at the border wall prototypes and to speak with Border Patrol Agents. He also took advantage of the opportunity to address the media and the American people.
Trump and one of the CBP officers, chief sector agent Rodney Scott, held up a poster with a before and after comparison of photos of the San Diego border area highlighting the tremendous difference a wall makes. In many ways the facts about those changes are the best arguments in favor of wall construction.
Pointing to the poster, President Trump said, “But here it is before and the people are just pouring across. Agent Scott points out, “This is one of the sections where we have double fencing, actually triple fencing. You have a wall here, you have bollards. Again, it’s outdated materials but it proves the concept.”
He continues, “But sir, the economic driver of this outlet mall that was built after we reestablished law and order in San Diego sector, and right behind that’s over 500 brand new homes, where people have felt so safe near the border they moved back in. But that’s only because the US Border Patrol reestablished law and order.”
President Trump picked up on that point, which echoes his own views, saying, “So they reestablished law and order in San Diego when they put up a wall. And it’s not a superior wall, it’s an inferior wall but it’s a wall. And you actually used the term ‘reestablished law and order.’ You hear it folks, I mean, say what you want. This is life. These are the facts of life.”
Asked about the prototypes that he came to view and their reviews, Trump spoke favorably of fencing that has gaps that can be seen through as well as those that have a rounded, over-sized top that makes it very difficult to scale.
Scott points out that in addition to the benefits realized on our side of the border, there is an equal benefit on the southern side as it has become less of a staging area for illegal traffic than it was previously.
Trump is then asked about the criticism by California Governor Jerry Brown of spending the money to build the wall. Trump replies, “I think Governor Brown has done a very poor job running California. They have the highest taxes in the United States, the place is totally out of control.”
He says, “You have sanctuary cities where you have criminals living in the sanctuary cities. And then the mayor of Oakland goes out and notifies when ICE is going in to pick them up. He addresses the exorbitant taxes and cites a wall as one thing California needs to do to improve the quality of life of the American citizens of that state.
