As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, one would expect that John McCain was in attendance for the confirmation hearings for the Homeland Security Secretary, General John Kelly. McCain was in those hearings and he actually interacted with the now confirmed Homeland Security Secretary.
In that questioning, McCain asked General Kelly about the border wall, with Kelly replying, “A physical barrier in and of itself will not do the job.” Kelly also stated, ” It has to be really a layered defense. If you were to build a wall from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico,” you would still need to utilize humans, sensors and observation devices. Was McCain napping or playing video games again on his handheld during that part of the hearings?
Two days ago General Kelly stated in an interview with Catherine Herridge that “Any discussion about the protection of our southwest border involves discussion of physical barriers but also of technological sensors, things like that. But it’s a layered approach, and it’s got to be backed up by great men and women who are going to make sure that the wall is intact.”
The Trump approach to securing the border is not in doubt, it’s being laid out by the man in charge of building the barrier and stated publicly that it is a multiple faceted approach. McCain, given his positions, should be aware of all of this. If he isn’t, maybe he should at least make the switch from CNN to Fox.
The video demonstrates that McCain simply wants to play one of his favorite roles, that of the condescending old curmudgeon, arrogantly and impatiently playing word games with the interviewer. The cost of the technology and the humans to back it up have never been asserted as part of the equation. Of course Trump is not expecting Mexico to subsidize our labor expenses or our drone costs. The physical barrier, the wall, is and has been the totality of what has been discussed. We can buy our own drones and pay our own salaries, something McCain must know.
He’s asked if Mexico paying us for the cost of the wall is a viable option but can’t produce any reason why it isn’t. He’s just caustic in saying no, repeating his contention as a response, basically saying the grumpy, disrespectful equivalent of “because I said so.”
The snarky old man is desperate to place himself as being superior to the person in the White House and to try to cling on to the unwarranted relevance he’s being afforded. The newsman understands that McCain is a jerk and lets it roll off of him. We, the American people understand the same thing, but we don’t have to let it roll off.
The establishment pawn from Arizona works for us, or at least he’s supposed to. We don’t have to put up with his bad attitude, his obstructionism or his ego. Find a golf course somewhere, McCain, and just go away.
