Preet Bharara, the US attorney for the Manhattan-based Southern District of New York, tweeted Saturday that he was fired after he refused to submit the resignation requested by President Trump. It does appear that once again Trump was able to correctly evaluate the character or lack thereof of a potential member of his team.
Bharara must have known this would be the result, so he apparently chose to go out making a statement of opposition to the Trump administration rather than as a gentleman. There’s also the reported Schumer connection which was behind his originally being told he would be allowed to stay on.
That offer may have been made as a personal gesture of cooperation to Bharara’ sponsor, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY). If that was the case, then the reversal is completely understandable, more than justified and rather delectable. Reciprocal cooperation from Schumer has been non-existent.
Bharara tweeted on his Twitter account on Saturday afternoon, “I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired. Being the US Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life.” Right, Preet, old boy, don’t let that left-hinged door hit you in your Clinton on the way out.
Bharara was one of 46 Obama appointees within the DOJ who were told to submit their resignations on Friday afternoon. CNN reported that “Acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente called Bharara on Saturday to ask if it was true that he was refusing to resign, and Bharara told him yes.” A short time later Boente called Bharara back, telling him that Trump was firing him.”
CNN quoted an unnamed official within the Trump administration as stating that exceptions to the across the board resignation request were made for Acting Deputy Attorney General Boente and President Trump’s nominee to be the next Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein. The other 46 Obama appointees were relieved of their duties, “because of uniformity. It’s important to have consistency and uniformity in matters like this.”
Not surprisingly, Schumer issued an attack statement on Friday denouncing the DOJ cleansing, saying he was “troubled” to learn that his boy Bharara was among those hitting the street. He stated that President Trump had called him in November “and assured me he wanted Mr. Bharara to continue to serve as U.S. attorney for the Southern District.” Elections have consequences, Chuck, so does being a difficult, toxic, obstructionist jerk in the four months since that time.
Ignoring the fact that Bill Clinton fired 93 US Attorneys on day one of his administration, Schumer whined about replacements for those purged not yet being confirmed. At the pace his Senate Democrats are permitting confirmations, that wouldn’t take place until after the midterms. Schumer, who always pretends he’s got the best interest of the country at heart, complained that purging prior to the replacements being named means “the President is interrupting ongoing cases and investigations and hindering the administration of justice.”
Look in the mirror, Chuckie boy, that’s what your stall tactics with AG Sessions did on a much grander scale. If you’re so concerned, demonstrate it by foregoing politics and confirming their replacements. Bharara previously was Schumer’s chief counsel before being appointed as US attorney in 2009 by Hussein Obama. It’s amazing that we didn’t see that Obama hankie being deployed and more dry tears shed over the “mean-spirited” action of our deplorable President.
Bharara announced that Joon H. Kim, the current deputy US attorney, will serve in his place. Don’t worry Preet, any job worth having is worth getting fired from. Maybe being judged by the company you keep isn’t always fair, but in instances involving connections to Chuck Schumer, it’s always wise.
Going head to head against President Trump probably isn’t reflective of Preet’s intellect, but that decision, along with his association with Schumer indicates he’s a pig-headed leftist. What better reason is there to fire somebody?
I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired. Being the US Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life.
