Who knows better than a sheriff and the citizens he represents when he and his department are in violation of the law? How does one tell the difference between a responsive sheriff and a stupid, corrupt one? The stupid one waits for the feds to force him to change his policies to comply with federal law, the smart one does what he knows he should have been doing all along. Of course he’s not as moral as the sheriff who never violated the law in the first place, but in the world of sanctuary local and state government, there is a lot of relativity and ambiguity.
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco has announced that his county will no longer demand a judge’s order before detaining an illegal alien wanted by federal immigration officials. Demarco, in what is an obvious lie in an attempt to save face claims the about face is not in recognition of the policies of the incoming Trump administration.
Instead he said the move is the result of , careful “legal analysis.” Of course that analysis was prompted by the realization that he’s going to be in court soon if he didn’t order the change, but he wouldn’t want to credit Mr. Trump.
Now he’s on board, calling for the deportation of illegals who have been accused and convicted of crime in the United States. DeMarco said, “I do believe this is good public policy because it focuses on criminals. We’re talking about people who entered the country illegally and have committed crimes and have been convicted of crimes.”
That was the same situation that existed in September or July or last year, DeMarco, are you sure it didn’t have anything to do with the fact that the outlaws covering your butt were being kicked out of office? Having a Department of Homeland Security that isn’t an induction agency and an Attorney General who will prosecute violating “law enforcement” agencies played absolutely no role in your decision?
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is now also supportive of enforcement, finding an excuse for doing what they should have been doing along and saying “I opposed open-ended detainer requests because, among other things, they placed an enormous burden on local government to spend millions on incarceration to cover unfunded mandates. However, Suffolk County works closely with federal law enforcement, and a limited, 48-hour detainer represents a step in the right direction.”
Newsday interviewed Dan Cadman of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) who stated that with Mr. Trump’s staunch position against illegal immigration, he expects more cities and counties to reverse their sanctuary policies.
Cadman said, “I mean, let’s face it . . . a new administration is coming in and the new administration has said, unambiguously, they’re going to take an entirely different and harder approach toward sanctuaries. I don’t think that many counties and many county sheriffs and some police departments want to be between the hammer and the anvil.”
Not the smart ones anyway; the others deserve to get hit in the head.
