(FreeBeacon) Illinois Republicans want to take back state road money that’s been dedicated in the budget for former President Barack Obama  presidential center in Chicago.

State Rep. David McSweeney has filed legislation that would revoke the $180 million in state tax dollars directed to prepare the roads for Obama’s presidential building. The money was part of the larger budget passed in June that spends more than the state ever has, but still shorted items like grants for veterans. Construction of the project was intended to be funded by private donations.

In a release announcing the funding, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said it “demonstrates Illinois’ commitment to honoring the legacy of Chicago’s favorite son and daughter.” Instead of Chicago, the money would be re-allocated to Schaumburg, Dixon, Ottawa, Peoria, Paris, Springfield, Effingham, Collinsville, and Carbondale should McSweeney’s bill become law.

“What we simply do is take this money from the capital budget and reallocate it to roads throughout the state of Illinois,”McSweeney said. “I support the Obama Presidential Center, but only if it’s privately funded.” The structure that will sit on Chicago’s south side is not going to be Obama’s official library, which would allow for more federal funds. McSweeney said it’s all the more reason to pull back state funding.

Also signed on to McSweeney’s legislation are Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, and Rep. John Cabello, R-Machesney Park. State Sen. Sam McCann, who also is running for governor, has filed similar legislation. Construction of the presidential center is slated to begin this fall and be completed sometime after 2021.

  1. If they really mean it and do it, I’ll give them a thumbs up. I can believe very little of what the uni-party does that benefits tax payers. Especially in an election year.

  2. Hey, Rahm! During Obama’s 8 year term he claimed to be “Hawaiian” so drop the phony”son” excuse. Besides the birthers, some Hawaii locals are questioning Obama’s real birth place since his nostalgic ties to Hawaii ended abruptly when he left the White House and when he chose Chicago over Honolulu for his presidential center. Take the braddah out of Hawaii but you can’t take Hawaii out of the braddah. We recognize our own. Hawaii No ka oi. Oops, did someone forgot to prep this slippery phony? Chicago, take a hint & support McSweeney’s bill.

Good to hear some in Chicago are fighting back and Standing up for what is Right.
I just read a piece about that Library and Presidential place. TheWashingtonStandard.com.
Obama apparently trying to do a land grab to have that presidential building put in that public park area where the library was to be built. Lawsuit filed to stop it.
I’m Sorry I don’t recall all the specifics, that’s why I commented about where I read the story.
Maybe Chicago is catching on to this slimy snake.
My comment isn’t intended to step on any toes.

  4. Obama is postponing construction of his Community Center for another year.

  5. i also see where people there closed off the streets leading to Wrigley field demanding that SCUMBAG MAYOR STEP DOWN.
they also need to do that about this THIEF OF THEIR TAX MONEY.

James, I read that also, it was a huge part of Lakeshore Drive.
Haven’t heard of any updates of what results they might have got out of the protest.
