It’s logical to deduce that during their November 21st meeting in Trump Tower, President Trump could have asked Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) if she would be open to helping him with problems that fall into her areas of expertise. Gabbard is a Major in the Hawaii Army National Guard with two deployments to Iraq and serves on the House Armed Services Committee.
In an interview following their November meeting, Gabbard said she and Mr. Trump discussed legislation she was backing to end what she described as “our country’s illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government.” Mr. Trump asked Gabbard to meet with him, she said, for a discussion of “Syria, the fight to defeat the ISIS and al Qaeda, and other foreign policy issues.”
This week Rep Gabbard made a trip to Syria, with her making the Department of Defense (DOD) aware of her plans prior to her departure and them claiming no involvement in the arrangements. Neither the White House nor State Department has provided any additional information.
While she was there she met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus. Gabbard, a strong opponent of the US operation in Syria issued a statement, saying, “Originally, I had no intention of meeting with Assad, but when given the opportunity, I felt it was important to take it. I think we should be ready to meet with anyone if there’s a chance it can help bring about an end to this war, which is causing the Syrian people so much suffering.”
Gabbard told CNN, “Whatever you think about President Assad, the fact is that he is the president of Syria. In order for any peace agreement, in order for any possibility of a viable peace agreement to occur, there has to be a conversation with him. The Syrian people will determine his outcome and what happens with their government and their future.”
She reinforced the beliefs of many that the Obama regime had allied itself with al-Qaeda and ISIS, using them as their proxy army in an effort to install a regime more to their liking. Upon her return to the US, she proclaimed, “The U.S. must stop supporting terrorists who are destroying Syria and her people. The U.S. and other countries fueling this war must stop immediately. We must allow the Syrian people to try to recover from this terrible war.”
Rep Gabbard continued, “My visit to Syria has made it abundantly clear: Our counterproductive regime change war does not serve America’s interest, and it certainly isn’t in the interest of the Syrian people. As I visited with people from across the country, and heard heartbreaking stories of how this war has devastated their lives, I was asked, ‘Why is the United States and its allies helping al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups try to take over Syria? Syria did not attack the United States. Al-Qaeda did.’ I had no answer.”
Gabbard added, “I return to Washington, DC with even greater resolve to end our illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government.”
Of course the official Obama regime version of what we’re doing in Syria and why is much different and it seems likely that President Trump wanted her opinion on what she sees as being the actual situation on the ground from the perspective of the Syrian people, as one who doesn’t support war for profit and territory acquisition.
Her office notes her fact-finding trip also included meetings with President Aoun of Lebanon, and Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hariri, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Elizabeth Richard, the highest Islamic authority in Syria and Assad confidant Grand Mufti Hassoun, Archbishop Denys Antoine Chahda of the Syrian Catholic Church of Aleppo, humanitarian workers, students, small business owners, and others. She returned with a wealth of information from across the social spectrum.
There has been no word of subsequent meetings to pass any of that valuable information along.
