Senator Rand Paul had been expected to be a “no” vote in the Foreign Relations Committee on CIA Director Pompeo for Secretary of State. He had a change of heart…
President Trump’s nominee to replace globalist Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, received an unexpected recommendation by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) voted to recommend and Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) changed his vote to “present” from “no.” [[WATCH VIDEO BELOW]]
The 11-10 committee vote was largely a symbolic gesture, as three Democrats up for reelection in states President Trump carried have already stated that they would be voting for confirmation, Joe Manchin (WV), Heidi Heitkamp (ND) and Joe Donnelly (IN).
Rand Paul joined Martha McCallum to explain what prompted him to switch his vote from a “no” to a “yes.” He stated that after meeting with and again speaking with Director Pompeo as well as several conversations with President Trump on the matter, he felt more comfortable that Pompeo shares President Trump’s negative views on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and wars of regime change.
Paul said, “The President reiterated in very strong terms that we’ve been at war in too many places for too long. And I think the President’s going to surprise a lot of people by really, really trying hard to get us extricated from some of these wars.”
Asked if President Trump promised that type of quick exit from Syria, Paul replied, “I think it wasn’t so much specific on timetable and places, but I would tell you that the President and I share a great deal when we talk about the desire to bring some of our troops home and to have our troops protecting our country and not spread out across the world.”
He continues, “And really, I’ve always been an advocate, I mean, Trump was probably the closest to me on foreign policy of any of the other sixteen running, and so I’ve always been an advocate and a supporter of the President on this. And I want to make sure the people around him share his vision. And over time I’m coming to believe that, and I’m hopeful that Director Pompeo does share that vision.”
Paul adds, “But the President told me one way or another it’s his vision and he’s not going to be persuaded to start more land wars and have hundreds of thousands of troops in the Middle East, no matter who’s around him.”
