An American photo journalist named Matt Schrier was kidnapped and held by al-Qaeda for seven months in six different prison locations. He was tortured and starved before eventually escaping.
He’s now alleging that the FBI not only didn’t do everything they could to gain his release, they were using him as bait, allowing the terrorists to have access to his bank accounts and to continue his captivity in order to gain intelligence information. That might even have been okay as an ongoing component of the investigation if he had been reimbursed for his losses. He wasn’t and in fact was sent a bill for the airfare home to the US. After his escape Schrier began investigating his own kidnapping and discovered a pattern of betrayal by the FBI agents who were handling his case. He says that he first thought it was just a matter of incompetence on the part of the agents, “but the more I dug the larger the pattern became, until obviously it’s not coincidence, coincidence, coincidence.”
Schrier says, “I found emails from the FBI trying to convince my mother I was okay six months in. I found records of them buying laptops and tablets. The FBI said they froze my bank accounts, agent Lindsey Parodi, that turned out to be a lie. She left them open so that they can continue to steal the money and buy laptops. Citibank eventually froze them over six months in.”
He points out that the same day that Citibank froze his accounts, the agent sent an email to his mother advising her of them being frozen, which he says is more proof that the FBI was monitoring his financial records and lying about it. The agent also hacked his PayPal account illegally, telling his mother she had a subpoena when there was none.
It appears as though the agents were counting on Schrier not getting out alive and making the most of the opportunity to use him as a surveillance tool while he and his money lasted. If he hadn’t escaped on his own, the crooked FBI leadership and agents would have gotten away with it. Robert Mueller was the FBI Director when he was captured in December of 2012 and throughout his captivity. James Comey led the cover up afterwards, replacing Mueller in September of 2013.
Schrier details his inability to get anyone at the FBI to listen to his allegations. He’s faxed evidence to the FBI’s internal investigation section, filed an in person complaint at the Miami field office and faxed complaints to the Inspector General, all with no response. He contacted the OPR which responded by referring him back to the FBI. He also emailed James Comey, again with no response and was blocked when he attempted to contact him on Facebook.
Schrier says, “It’s absurd to think that they didn’t know, they had to know. This is multiple, this is an entire section in the FBI working with other organizations, CIA is definitely involved because it’s an overseas activity on three different continents. The director has to know about something like that. It has to be sanctioned.
He declares, “This was not an investigation, this was an operation. And I was basically the bait.” He notes that with the current revelations about the true nature of the FBI and how corrupt their leadership is, now is the time that maybe people will believe what he says really happened where a year or two earlier they might have dismissed him as vindictive. He says the FBI “really needs to be gutted from the inside out.”
