Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted their largest workplace raid in a decade at a meatpacking plant in Tennessee on Thursday, picking up 97 illegal aliens working in violation of immigration law. It’s not as if they and their employer haven’t been warned.
Most of the illegals were Mexicans, with ten arrested on federal criminal charges and another on state charges. The remaining 86 were picked up for suspicion of being squatting in the United States illegally.
Local illegal alien advocacy groups immediately flew into rage and outrage. Stephanie Teatro, Director of a group called the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, complained that the illegals in the state were frightened by the raid.
She said, “People [illegal squatters] are panicked. People [in the US illegally] are terrified to drive. People are terrified to leave their homes.” That’s not true. While they may be terrified, all of them left their homes when they crossed the border. What they’re actually terrified of is returning to their homes in their own sh*thole nation, Mexico.
That’s too bad but they’re not welcome in our country. There’s a right way to come to this America, the legal way. Choosing to come the wrong way, by sneaking in across our porous southern border, carries with it inherent risks, such as workplace raids and deportation.
There’s also a risk to the employers, such as in this case, Southeastern Provision in Grainger County, TN, who knowingly hire illegals to work in their poultry processing and slaughter house operations, as well as other businesses and elsewhere, of civil and criminal penalties. An employer, such as this one with 97 illegals on site, and its officials will likely face prosecution under the policies of the Trump administration.
Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan warned scofflaw businesses last year that the Trump administration would begin targeting employers that hire illegals with increased workplace raids. Those raids have been visible with the arrest of almost two hundred illegals in California in January and February of this year.
Homan said, “Now we’re going to prosecute the employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens,” he said. “We’re going to detain and remove the illegal alien workers.” He added, “We’re going to enforce the laws on the books without apology. We’ll continue to prioritize what we do, but it’s not OK to violate the laws of this country anymore. You’re going to be held accountable.”
The raids, combined with employers facing multiple counts that carry $10,000 fines and jail time should help to persuade those who doubted Homan’s sincerity that the Trump administration is serious about cleaning up the illegal alien problem and that enablers, who provide the magnets, are seen as just as much a part of the problem as the illegal alien workers.
