In a Thursday vote the US House demonstrated its strong support for Israel and equally considerable disdain for the UN with a 342-80 vote in favor of a non-binding resolution rebuking the United Nations for criticizing Israeli settlements in December’s UN Security Council Resolution 2334.
The bi-partisan, non-binding resolution declares American support for Israel and demands that the United States reject any future UN subterfuge which are similarly “one-sided and anti-Israel.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan said, “Our government abandoned our ally Israel when she needed us the most. It is time to repair the damage done by this misguided hit job at the UN.”
Nearly 80 Democrats opposed the measure, claiming it contained inaccuracies and distortions, misrepresenting the Middle East peace process. Laughably, they also accused the Republicans of unfairly attacking Hussein Obama in the closing days of his ‘presidency.’ Of course their resolution was merely a response to the initial attack on Israel by that same Hussein Obama, but they considered what he did as fair. It’s only when Republicans respond that Obama is worthy of protection provided by his lame duck status. Rep Gerry Connolly, (D-VA) said, “The point of the measure seems to be to bash Obama on the way out.”
A similar bipartisan measure to reprimand the UN has likewise been introduced in the Senate. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), one of the co-sponsors, said, “Israel is always the bad guy in the eyes of the United Nations.”
Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee are cosponsors of the measure, declaring that the UN Resolution “undermines the prospect for Israelis and Palestinians resuming productive, direct negotiations.” The called for the UN resolution 2334 to be either be repealed or fundamentally altered.
