A special counsel to investigate DOJ is a little more uncomfortable for Sessions and Rodentstein than one targeting Trump, but like it or not that’s what Sen Judiciary Republicans…
AG Jeff Sessions is coming under more pressure to appoint a second special counsel, this time Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has oversight over the DOJ and FBI.
Led by Chairman Chuck Grassley, the Judiciary Republicans sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, the driving force within the DOJ behind the anti-Trump witch hunt, Rod Rosenstein. In it they argued that a special counsel is required because the Office of Inspector General “does not have the tools that a prosecutor would to gather all the facts.”
They pointed out that the Inspector General lacks the ability to obtain testimony from witnesses who are not Justice Department employees, such as those in the State Department who had interactions with Christopher Steele relevant to the dossier.
They wrote, “We believe that a special counsel is needed to work with the Inspector General to independently gather the facts and make prosecutorial decisions, if any are merited,” noting, “The Justice Department cannot credibly investigate itself without these enhanced measures of independence to ensure that the public can have confidence in the outcome.”
The Senators asked 31 questions in their letter concerning the dossier and the seemingly endless Russia, Russia, Russia investigation. The letter also revealed previously unknown information regarding FBI dirty cop Bruce Ohr, and the fact that he was interviewed 12 times by the FBI during 2016 and 2017. This was during the time period in which both Ohr and his wife were engaged with Steele and Fusion GPS.
Senate Judiciary Republicans want to know whether the FBI and DOJ were aware of that relationship. Probably also of interest is the possibility that the FBI may have been directing crafting of the dossier or critiquing it on behalf of Clinton or the Obama White House.
They also asked the IG for information as to who at the DOJ knew that the Clinton campaign and DNC paid for the dossier and why the Clinton funding of the dossier was not revealed to the FISA court.
The Daily Caller notes that “Grassley has recently started asking questions about possible links between Steele and Oleg Deripaska, a Russian aluminum magnate close to Vladimir Putin. Steele and Deripaska have a common contact in Adam Waldman, an American attorney who was in touch with Virginia Sen. Mark Warner last year about meetings related to the dossier.”
Once again a prominent Democrat involved in the witch hunt has the appearance of being engaged in the very improprieties they’re trying to pin on our President.
