Rep Louie Gohmert is asked if he thinks it’s time to replace both McConnell and Ryan as GOP leaders. He plays it a little safe with Paul Ryan but unloads on the Senate, McConnell…
In the setup for his interview with Rep Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Stewart Varney plays a clip of President Trump saying that this was the only time he was going to sign a garbage bill like the one he just held his nose and signed, the Paul Ryan – Mitch McConnell disaster that was once again the fulfillment of the Democrat Party’s wish list. After noting that Gohmert didn’t vote for the bill, Varney asks if it’s time for Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan to hit the dusty trail. Gohmert points out that the spending bill could end up costing the Republicans the majority and in that case there’d be a total change of leadership in the House no matter what. Evidently he’s choosing to battle Ryan later, if need be.
Gohmert points out that the Senate likes to hang on to bad leadership, so there might not be any changes on that side. He says, “You’ve got to remember, Stewart, when you’ve got McConnell, Cornyn, Schumer in the room from the Senate. You’ve got Ryan, you’ve got Pelosi,” somehow he’s not sure about Steny Hoyer, “I don’t think he’s for a wall,” saying that apparently “there’s nobody in the room that wants a wall.”
Gohmert points out the things that got the President elected were not popular among the establishment obstructionists and they haven’t changed in that regard. They’re still fighting him every step of the way and it may well cost the GOP the leadership in the House.
Varney asks Gohmert if there’s any way they can ignore or invalidate portions of the Omnibus bill, which Gohmert replies that they cannot, that a line item veto was struck down by the Supreme Court. He notes that the House is already working on next year’s budget and has a feeling that history will repeat itself, that the House will pass 12 budgets and the Senate will pass none.
He says, “It’s going to be another CR, another omnibus, get us past November, and if that happens then I think we’re in big trouble. We have got to force the Senate to pass appropriations bills. Do a budget, pass twelve appropriations bills. They haven’t done it in years. Over and over the House passes twelve appropriations bills, we have a budget, and then they come along and say, “We’re not doing any of that because we don’t want to take tough votes.”
“It’s time for the Senate to get some real leadership,” says Gohmert, “and stand up and do the things they were elected to do. And I think on spending bills they’ve got to get to 51 votes. It costs us hundreds of billions of dollars to buy the Democrats to get to 60. It’s outrageous, it’s got to stop.”
