On Friday President Donald Trump announced the inevitable was taking place, that he was making a move at the Chief of Staff position, the leak infested position, and bringing in his Homeland Security Secretary to fill the spot.
The selection indicates that Kelly is someone President Trump trusts as a capable leader who knows how to keep his mouth shut and whose respect for the office of the President is unquestioned. He must certainly feel that Kelly is a loyal American who will put country and the success of his administration ahead of personal recognition and career considerations.
President Trump made the announcement via tweet, saying, “I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff. He is a Great American…. John has also done a spectacular job at Homeland Security. He has been a true star of my Administration.”
Kelly is not the typical Chief of Staff type, which is generally a Washington insider. That didn’t fit well with the Trump agenda of draining the swamp. Hopefully now that he’s got someone on his side, President Trump will be able to make some progress.
He should also have less difficulty defending himself against the witch hunt and the rest of the media propaganda now that a major source of their inside information has been shut down. Of course there is still the deep state to deal with, Kelly should be well-suited to that as well, his years at USSOUTHCOM providing a strong foundation.
President Trump tweeted the obligatory thanks and good luck message to Priebus, saying, “I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country. We accomplished a lot together and I am proud of him!”
As expected, it was the beginning of the end when President Trump brought in Anthony Scaramucci without Priebus’ knowledge and over his eventual objections. He started a public feud which appeared to be designed to bring things to a head, which it did. The leaking of Scaramucci’s financial disclosure statements didn’t do much to help his cause.
Those in the Priebus circle, former press secretary Sean Spicer, former assistant press secretary Michael Short, and former deputy chief of staff Katie Walsh — have been pushed out or resigned from the Trump White House. Two of them, Short and Walsh, were reported to have been identified as the source of leaks.
Not only will Kelly not be a source of information for the media and President Trump’s enemies and detractors, he won’t tolerate others who are. Dina Habib Powell might want to watch her step – and her mouth.
