Professor Swain explains how Democrats were the party of slavery and formed and used the KKK as their enforcement arm. It was the GOP who gave blacks the rights of citizens
Professor Carol Swain of Vanderbilt University dispels the myths about and propagated by the Democratic Party as being the party of equal opportunity and anti-slavery.
She points out how nothing could be further from the truth. Democrats, says Swain, “have fought against every major civil rights initiative and has a long history of discrimination.”
She says, “The Democratic Party defended slavery, started the Civil War, opposed reconstruction, founded the Ku Klux Klan, imposed segregation, perpetrated lynchings and fought against the Civil Rights Acts of the 1950s and 1960s.”
“In contrast,” says Swain, “the Republican was founded in 1854 as an anti-slavery party. It’s mission was to stop the spread of slavery into the new Western territories, with the aim of abolishing it entirely.”
She points to the Dred Scott case of 1857 in which the Supreme Court ruled that slaves are not citizens but were property. “The seven justices who voted in favor of slavery – all Democrats,” says Swain. The two justices who dissented, both Republicans.”
She notes that the issue was later resolved during the Civil War and that the commander-in-chief during that war was the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln. “Six days after the Confederate Army surrendered,” says Swain, “John Wilkes Booth, a Democrat, assassinated President Lincoln.”
She describes Lincoln’s successor, his Democrat Vice President Andrew Johnson, as vehemently opposing the Lincoln plan to integrate the newly-freed slaves into the American population. Swain says Johnson and the Democrats were unified in their opposition to the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery,” as well as the 14th Amendment, giving blacks citizenship and the 15th Amendment allowing them to vote.
She notes, “All three passed only because of universal Republican support.” Democrats did not elect a black man to Congress until 1935 despite the Republicans having 22 serving in the US Congress by 1900. She explains that once reconstruction ended and federal troops were sent back home, Democrats “roared back into power.”
She goes on to explain the terrorism engaged in by the Ku Klux Klan, which was essentially an armed enforcement wing of the Democratic Party and how it is they, not the Republicans, who are responsible for most of the injustices that they now assign to the GOP. Just like in everything else they do, Democrats project their own blatant racism onto their opposition.
