Talk about bi-partisan support, Congressman Peter DeFazio, an Oregon Democrat, introduced a bill on the House floor on Thursday called the Drain the Swamp Act. In introducing the legislation, Rep DeFazio said, “My bill would make violations of President-elect Trump’s recently announced revolving door lobby ban punishable by law.”
DeFazio continued, “He said that he’ll bar political appointees from lobbying for five years after they serve in his administration and permanently from lobbying for a foreign government. Unfortunately his proposal lacks any enforcement mechanism.”
“I want this to be more than a press release,” says DeFazio. “I want to help him in this effort. Just look at the Office of Special Trade Representative. Why is our trade policy so bad? Because people work for industry and then come back and work for the government and go work for industry, promote their own interests. That goes on in many agencies.”
DeFazio says, “This would be a good thing for America. So I would extend the existing penalties, which apply to very few people over a shorter period of time, with penalties up to fifty thousand dollars and one year in jail, to cover all of the 3,648 executive branch political appointees.”
DeFazio adds, “I’m introducing it today, knowing it’s the end of the Congress but I’m going to provide it to the Trump transition team in the hope that they will endorse this bill, which I will introduce on the first day of the next Congress and hope to have President-elect Trump’s support, put teeth of law behind his promise.”
Whether it’s the typical partisanship or an honest effort on the part of the Congressman to help to drain the swamp will become apparent as the legislation is reviewed and analyzed. If it takes the form of law it would be much more difficult for a future Democrat or other establishment type Republican to recruit corrupt swamp vermin to work in their administrations, a benefit to all Americans.
It’s a surprise, an Oregon Democrat appearing to embrace Mr. Trump’s policies more wholly than a Wisconsin Republican.
