Steve Bannon has a very low opinion of the George W. Bush administration and its foreign policy team in particular. In Sunday’s interview with Charlie Rose on 60 Minutes, he let that be known and named names.
Bannon describes them sarcastically, saying, “The same geniuses that got us into Iraq, that’s the geniuses of the Bush administration. I hold these people in contempt, total and complete contempt. As Rose offers the initial stages of a defense of them, Bannon cuts him off.
He says, “I don’t want to hear it, I don’t want to hear it. It gets all over me like nothing else and you know why? They’re idiots and they’ve gotten us into this situation and they question a good man like Donald Trump?
Rose asks, “Who are you talking about?” Bannon provides some weak resistance to getting any more specific, saying “I don’t want to name names.” Rose tells him, “Well you have to name names because you’re painting with a broad brush.”
It seems he really did want to name names as he reversed himself rather quickly. Bannon says, “Well, you know, the Condi Rice, the George W. Bush’s entire national security apparatus and the national security…’
Rose follows up, offering names of his own for confirmation, “Brent Scowcroft, Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Dick Cheney.” Bannon says, “Yes, absolutely,” as he runs down the names, “all of it, all of it, all of it, all of it. By the way the Obama crowd almost the same. Clinton crowd almost the same. It’s three administrations.”
Maybe he’ll go into more detail at some point in the future. Perhaps Bannon can enlighten us as to why those geniuses took us to war in Iraq when the training and planning center for 9/11 was supposedly in Afghanistan. Or why we toppled the Libyan government when they were cooperating with the Obama authoritarianism. They seemed more like administration targets looking for an excuse to be attacked than actual threats. And we can’t forget the WMD threat that didn’t exist and the way it was hyped and sold to us.
But the idea that they didn’t know what they were doing might be a little generous. Perhaps they just didn’t care, the end justified the means.
