Trey Gowdy has, by all appearances, made every effort to remain above the partisan bickering that Democrats have employed in an effort to sabotage his committee’s investigation into the events in Benghazi. The allies of the criminal former Secretary of State have attempted to mischaracterize the proceedings in an effort to save their candidate from answering for her crimes and have been ever-amping up the rhetoric as her candidacy self-destructs.
With the latest, increasingly desperate attacks by Democrat committee members assailing the process that they are themselves a begrudging party to, particularly in regards to its integrity and its validity, Gowdy seems to have now recognized that it’s time to fight fire with a little fire of his own.
The Hill reports that Rep Gowdy began by sending a thirteen page letter to Rep Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and Democrat committee members rebuking their obstructionism and counterproductive efforts to protect their party leadership at all costs.
Gowdy and his fellow Republicans will also mount a defense by releasing 1,500 pages of emails, including information relating to Libya, some of which are damaging to the Clinton claims of innocence, ignorance, best intentions or however she is characterizing her crimes on any particular given day.
He wrote, “Simply because you have chosen to play politics with this committee and the State Department has chosen to play politics by shielding its former secretary at the expense of the truth does not mean that this committee was founded on politics, is based on politics or will veer off course due to the political actions and allegations of others.”
Noting the gravity of the new revelations his committee has produced, Gowdy said, “The contents of these emails are quite remarkable,” in his letter. He referenced the heavy involvement of Clinton’s associate Sidney Blumenthal in the transmission of sensitive data via unsecured methods, using terms such as “simply astonishing” and “mind-boggling” to describe the offenses. The emails included the multiple daily messages transmitting “unvetted intelligence,” including that from a former CIA officer, between Clinton and Blumenthal. Much of that correspondence dealt with the unfolding events in Libya.
Based upon the newly-released data, which included the transmission of classified documents and relating to a US intelligence source, Gowdy indicated that it is likely that Blumenthal will be called upon again to testify.
Never one to let decency, respect or moral character interfere with his blatant partisanship, even when it involves a legitimate investigation into the wrongdoing which led to the deaths of four Americans, ranking committee member Elijah Cummings (D-MD) described Gowdy’s letter as “a defensive and desperate attempt to save face” in the wake of a “terrible week.”
In a statement Cummings said, “His new proposal to selectively release yet another subset of emails reveals his obsession with Secretary Clinton and no new information about the Benghazi attacks.” He added, “If Chairman Gowdy wants to put out more of Mr. Blumenthal’s emails with the Secretary, why is he blocking the release of Mr. Blumenthal’s deposition transcript in which he answered hundreds of questions from Republicans about his emails?”
Democrats had earlier announced their intentions to release the testimony of senior Clinton aide Cheryl Mills’ committee testimony, to which Rep Gowdy replied that the Democrats “alone bear full responsibility for any consequences flowing from such an improper release.”
Gowdy wrote to Cummings saying, “I understand the position you are in, however, and do not begrudge you duteously playing your role. From this committee’s outset you have been under extreme pressure from your Democrat colleagues to act as an apologist and defense attorney for this Administration, which deemed this a “phony scandal” before the committee was ever formed. Your duty as Ranking Member of this Committee has not been to the American public but to your Democrat colleagues and to the Administration, including former Secretary Clinton. This is evidenced by your complete lack of interest in gathering any facts whatsoever, and instead spending the majority of your time issuing press releases describing Democrat straw men which no one is investigating except Democrats and you. These are the same old partisan Washington games with which the American people are fed up.”
Gowdy will allow five days of review by the Democrats prior to the Committee’s email release, which will place them into the public domain ahead of Clinton’s October 22nd Committee testimony.
