Rep Peter King (R-NY) formally stated his support on Sunday for expanded background checks for firearm sales and his intentions to pursue more rigorous national mental health screening requirements for the issuance of gun permits.
King spoke in an interview with The Washington Post regarding the latest instance of a self-obsessed liberal massacring random citizens, this time in California. He said, “This tragedy demonstrates once again the need to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.”
And to do so, the congressman from the gun-hostile state of New York is going to make things tougher on all of us, taking a big step down the slippery slope of infringement.
The liberal Republican who “will decide what’s best for us” described his stance saying, “Even though this issue may not be popular in particular congressional districts, if we want to be a national party, we ought to be looking closely at it.”
So it’s about trampling on the Constitution and our rights in order to become a national party. Peter King needs to advance his career.
He introduced a bill last year along with a California Democrat, Mike Thompson, to extend background checks to private firearm transactions. It was a companion bill to a Senate bill which died and was never brought to the House floor.
King described his chances right now of getting a bill to the floor this summer as “not good,” but he’s on the record in support of a discussion on Capitol Hill about using mental health as the means to obstruct firearm purchases and ownership.
Rep King is convinced we need him and the bureaucrats he would ultimately assign to implement his program to decide for us who has a second amendment right and who does not.
He said, “We’ve got to look at how we define mental illness, who is denied weapons and who is not, and focus the discussion. We have to have this debate.”
King is ignoring or ignorant of the fact that in most of these cases there are no significant indications of mental illness. Unless you take away the rights of law-abiding citizens, not privileges but rights, no effort will be effective at his stated goal.
One possible solution takes into consideration that most of these events are carried out by liberals, Democrat supporters. They are the same ones who are the most adamant proponents of an obliteration of our right to bear arms.
Rep King should begin his legislative attack by offering a bill that would suspend the rights of Democrats while permanently recognizing that the second amendment means exactly what it says. We can see how sincere their convictions are. RINOs like King could voluntarily surrender any firearms he owns if his personal commitments warrant it.
That would seem to be a logical way to address and resolve all of the various concerns Rep King and his anti-Constitution allies have.
