Inevitably, when you dole out ever-increasing pieces of a finite pie, you reach a point where some have to do without. In Massachusetts, Deval Patrick, loves the socialist giveaways almost as much as his friend Hussein Obama. Together, they’ve never met a welfare program they didn’t love.
His sanctuary state has its doors open as wide as the southern border and violating immigration law is a non-issue in Massachusetts. Obama has declared those laws to be “immigration suggestions,” so it’s bienvenidos estudiantes.
There are consequences that most conservatives can plainly see to this behavior, but the more philosophical liberals have to experience things first hand to understand their impact. They are beginning to get their dose of that understanding now.
Lacking sufficient numbers of Spanish-speaking teachers to meet the needs of the illegal children, many teachers have started placing them into classes for learning-impaired students, special education as it used to be known. The numbers are quite high, with one fifth of those in the Boston school system who are non-English speaking having been placed into special education English courses.
There are only a limited number of seats and now those American students who would have received that opportunity have lost it to foreigners. Forget that those American families pay property taxes for the education; Deval and company are going to give it to someone who has no right to it because it will buy them votes and short-term popularity.
Some of the liberal educators have detected the obvious. Yael Zakon-Bourke of the Massachusetts Association for Bilingual Education told the Boston Herald, “Part of the problem is the parents don’t speak English or know what’s going on.” Right, who knew people in Mexico or Central America spoke Spanish? There’s no way anyone could have possibly anticipated this problem.
It’s not as if the Boston school system is rolling in dough. They’ve been slashing budgets in the face of increasing numbers as have school districts across the nation. In spite of the financial constraints, the tax and spend liberals’ answer, according to the district, is to hire “qualified bilingual assessors.”
The problem isn’t restricted to Boston. Chelsea City Manager Jay Ash spoke of the consequences of the massive influx of non-English speaking students into the system, saying, “This is a stress on the entire system, and it is a stress that we need to have a conversation with our state and federal partners about resolving.”
Talk is cheap. There are too many bodies, too many illegal bodies. The real solution is simple, to send the illegals packing, but the bureaucrats won’t dare. No liberal will have the courage to enforce immigration laws but they have no qualms with raising taxes on citizens. That will be their answer. All of Massachusetts will share the pain to help Democrats transform the nation into their social welfare utopia.
Reinforcing the perception of out of touch intellectuals, Maria Serpa, a bilingual education professor at Lesley University told the Boston Herald, “It is shocking to me.” She added, “Unfortunately, based on the information I have, this still seems to be a problem.”
Yes, Maria, put down your latte; it’s called an illegal invasion and it’s a big problem.
